Handwriting

At West Didsbury CE Primary we use ‘Nelson’ Handwriting. It is a whole-school programme designed to help all children develop a confident, legible and personal handwriting style and meet higher curriculum expectations.

EYFS provide a range of experiences which focus on hand-eye co-ordination, gross and fine motor skills in order to develop the control necessary for mark making using a variety of resources. This leads to the more formal teaching of letter formation.

In Reception and Year 1 letter formation and handwriting form part of the phonics lesson. Each time a new sound is introduced, children are taught the correct formation. We also explicitly teach handwriting in guided sessions where fine and gross motor skills are further developed.

In Year 2, children are taught to join their handwriting. Throughout KS2, children are expected to join their handwriting and handwriting sessions are timetabled to help children develop a confident, legible and personal style.

Children in reception, year 1 and year 2 write in pencil and they transition to using a pen in lower KS2.
