Intent - Our curriculum is designed to equip the children with lifelong skills and experiences to design and create interesting and challenging products using a variety of different resources. The curriculum will enable the children to build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users and critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others

Implementation – We teach DT through the key concepts of cooking and nutrition, and processes.

In EYFS children are exposed to a variety of quality products and develop their understanding of the purpose of them. They have regular opportunities to work with a variety of materials, tools and techniques and are encouraged to work collaboratively and share ideas.

In Key Stage 1 children begin to identify the importance of variety in a healthy diet. They will begin to use cookery techniques to prepare food safely. We believe that it is important that children understand where food comes from and how it is produced. The children will begin to create simple products that are purposeful, functional and appealing using a range of techniques such as cutting, shaping and joining.

In Key Stage 2 children will be able to explain what makes a healthy diet and will be able to plan meals around this. As the children develop their knowledge of ingredients and cookery techniques, they will read and follow instructions. Children will research famous designers and use their knowledge of products to inform their own designs. As children progress through KS2 they will be able to critique, evaluate and analyse a range of products including their own using technical language.

Impact - The curriculum will be assessed through the pupils’ DT learning journeys, finished pieces, displays and photographic evidence. A level of attainment and attitude to design and technology sessions is recorded on the child’s annual report to parents. They will build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users and critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others. The children will develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
