UN convention on the Rights of the Child

Article 6: Children have the right to be healthy.

Article 31: Children have the right to rest and play.

Background:

Since 2013, the government has provided additional funding of £150 million per annum to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding is ring-fenced which means it can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools. Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

This funding is direct to schools to be spent with the following aims:

• Increasing participation rates in such activities as games, dance, gymnastics, swimming and athletics.
• Increasing participation and success in competitive school sports.
• Making the physical education curriculum more inclusive.
• Expanding the growth in the range of traditional and alternative sporting activities.
• Improving partnership work on physical education with other schools and other local partners.
• Finding links with other subjects that contribute to pupils’ overall achievement and their greater social, spiritual, moral and cultural skills.
• Making pupils more aware of the dangers of obesity, smoking and other such activities that undermine pupils’ health.

Please click on the links below to find out how we spent the funding throughout 2019-20.

Some of our aims included:

  • Targeting pupil premium children who are shown to be under represented.

  • Develop training for staff to increase their capacity in the teaching and learning of PE.

  • Expanding the range of clubs.

Areas to develop:

  • To give sports a higher priority and further increase pupils participation.
  • To continue to extend the extra-curricular provision, particularly for KS1 pupils.
  • To ensure that at least 85% of all children throughout school reach the age related end of year expectations in PE, including Physical Literacy and Theory Based Learning.
